Are you trying to get pregnant, but you are overweight? Are you deemed to doctors as obese? If so, you and your partner may be desperate to have a baby, but you both may be concerned there are complications along the way. Here is a discussion about this, hope helpful for you.

Question: Trying to get pregnant, but I am overweight!
My husband and I are trying to have a baby, however I am deemed to doctors as obese. We are desperate to have a child but my family are concerned that there maybe complications along the way. I've read up on subjects such as gestational diabetes, but I would really love to hear from people who have actually been there and had a baby or are currently pregnant and are in the same position as me. Thank you very much!

Then let us see what people think about this.

Hello de-ane, I just wanted to let you know that I am considered obese and am currently 29 weeks and 3 days pregnant with our first baby due on Nov. 14th. I am 5 ft. 11in. and weighed 280 lbs.

when I got pregnant. I want you to know, however, I had made some serious lifestyle changes and was down to 280 lbs. from 350 lbs. before getting pregnant. At 350 lbs. I had irregular periods, often having two periods per month, which my doctor indicated as a lack of ovulation.

I don't have PCOS, but was checked for it, as well as diabetes, and thyroid. All tests came back normal, so I decided to take charge of my health. After losing just 20 lbs. my periods became normal (31 day cycle). I followed the South Beach food guidelines: lots of fibrous fruits and veggies, whole grain carbohydrates and lean protein. I also exercised. I was feeling and looking better than I had in a looong time.

When the hubby and I decided to try to conceive, I had a complete physical (Complete Blood Count, TSH, cholesterol and glucose) and my yearly done. All was well. We got pregnant the first month we tried...very lucky and very happy. Although I have gained 30 lbs. back w/ this pregnancy, it is ok.

I have kept a lot of my healthy eating habits, even more important now to give my developing baby the nutrition he needs. I won't lie, I have made those trips to Wendy's and Pizza Hut, but they do not make up the whole of my diet. Also, I didn't restrict my caloric intake(to lose weight) during this pregnancy...

Pregnancy is not the time to lose weight, but a time to eat appropriately. 300 additional calories are all that are needed during pregnancy...hard to maintain, though ;). Also, try to get an ob/gyn who isn't prejudiced against big people, only concerned with your and your baby's health.

My dr. has never made negative comments on my weight. Good medical care from the get go is necessary.

All my best to you and good luck TTC! ;)

Hey everyone. I'm just reading through all the comments/replies and I see that some of them are over a year old. Have any of the women on here had any success getting pregnant? I recently started a thread through my page about trying on get pregnant while not being at medically "desirable" weight. Please feel free to post replies on my thread, thanks for your time!

I am just wondering what you finally did to concieve and what methods you used. I am currently overwieght and trying very hard to loose weight so that I can concieve and am suspected to have pcos. I am on metformin to regulate everything but do not agree that this is the best thing for me....what do others think?

------------------------------------

For those who have gotten pregnant after trying, I have never had a regular period, it has always been crazy. Is there anything I should say to my doctor to take me seriously and do something for me bacause I am 25 and all I keep hearing is that your young you have lots of time but there is no point of waiting for nothing. I need some help on what to ask for when I go to a new doctor. I have been trying and am desperate to get pregnant. Should I stay on the metformin and try it or put up a front and say aah no give me something directly related to getting pregnant since they dont even know for sure if I have pcos or even if metformin does anything for pcos.

meg & browneyedgirl, I'm in the same boat. this is my 3rd try with weight watchers, I had previously lost 60 lbs with them, but slowly gained it back. I was on BC for about 10 years, and stopped about 10 months ago. when I came of the BC I realized I didn't have regular cycles, my dr. put me on metformin and also suggested losing some weight, other than irregular periods and the weight I don't have other PCOS symptoms. What's been most frustrating for me is that my husband has just easily lost 35lbs and I'm only down 8. so I'm just going to keep trying through the frustration, I'll get there eventually.

Hey, I am currently over 13stone and trying to lose weight, I got the Wii Fit also and find it very good, especially the step aerobics. I did manage to get pregnant but it was a chemical pregnancy and lost it at just over 4 weeks. Having a healty diet and excercising is important for your health & the babies health, also if you suffer with any back or underactive thyroid like myself, you need to make sure that these are all looked after as your thyroid can go crazy when pregnant, and you may need to take extra medication. Just making small changes to your lifestyle can make a BIG difference.

Hi, I know its a late reply but better late than never, I am 31 years old and I am also obese,I am pregnant, I was 260 lbs when I got pregnant ansd I have pcos, (polycystic ovarian syndrome. I didnt go out for much. I used to weigh 306 lbs. I finally decided to change my weight because it was causing major depression which caused me to eat more and gain more and it was a vicious cycle, I got a job first and then I finally had the health insurance to see the doctor and get medicine, He prescribed Fastin (Phentermine) Metformin (Glucophage) and Simvastin. I started taking the coctail of these medicines and lost 66 lbs in 3 months,My weight was 240. It was amazing how I felt after losing that weight, I was full of energy and walking up a flight of stairs didnt hurt me anymore, as a matter of fact I moved in an apartment on the 6th floor and never took the elevator. I felt great. After 15 years of trying to concieve I finally got it, I fount out in July that I am pregnant, and I am now 17 weeks. Its a miracle but also it is from my losing weight. I am concerned about Gastational diabeties but I am being very careful of what I eat, Its simple to think of really, Would a pregnant woman who wants a baby badly smoke crack knowing it would cause horrible effects on the baby? Of course not. and eating is no laughing matter.
